The Los Angeles Rams made a huge investment in Jalen Ramsey during the 2019 season, trading two first-round picks to acquire the All-Pro cornerback. They’ll now be looking to make an even bigger commitment to him with plans to sign him to a record-breaking contract extension.

Ramsey spoke to reporters on Tuesday and vowed to keep his promise that he won’t holdout during training camp for an extension. Both sides have already been discussing an extension since he arrived in Los Angeles and the figure could blow the lid off the market for cornerbacks.

Jalen Ramsey to become the highest-paid NFL cornerback?

The 25-year-old wants to set the market for the position. We’ve already seen the cornerback market explode this offseason. The Miami Dolphins signed Byron Jones to a five-year, $82.5 million contract to make him the highest-paid cornerback. Shortly after, the Philadelphia Eagles traded for Darius Slay and gave him a record-setting deal worth $16.68 million annually.

According to The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue, Ramsey is expected to blow past both of those marks. The three-time Pro Bowl selection is expected to blow the lid off the market with a deal that could come within $20 million per season. At the very least, Ramsey’s extension will be well in excess of $15 million annually and soar past the mark set by Jones and Slay.

The Rams have big plans for their top cornerback this season under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. They want Ramsey to be happy and given his talent and their investment in him this past season, it’s only a matter of time before an extension is completed.
