Once he’s bought out by the Phoenix Suns here soon, former Washington Wizards guard Austin Rivers is expected to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies.
That’s the word from Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Rivers, 26, was acquired by Phoenix with Kelly Oubre in exchange for Trevor Ariza over the weekend. It was almost immediately noted that the Suns would buy out the remainder of his $12.65 million contract for this season.
A former first-round pick of the New Orleans Hornets, Rivers was averaging 7.2 points on just 31 percent shooting from distance for the Wizards prior to being dealt.
He enjoyed the best years of his career with the Los Angeles Clippers from 2014-18, averaging 11.1 points and shooting a robust 36 percent from three-point range.
At 16-14, Memphis has surprised this season. But it’s certainly in need of reinforcements out on the perimeter. Rivers should provide that.
