After missing out on Monty Williams then ruining a deal with Tyronn Lue, a new name is reportedly emerging as a potential favorite to be the Los Angeles Lakers next head coach.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Frank Vogel made a strong impression during his interview with the Lakers and both sides are expected to talk again about the team’s head coaching vacancy.

The former Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic coach has plenty of experience he can bring to Los Angeles.

He started out as an assistant coach with the Pacers and served in that role until he became the head coach in 2010. During his six-year run at the helm in Indiana, the Pacers went 250-181 in the regular season with five playoff appearances and two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Vogel’s tenure in Orlando wasn’t nearly as successful. In two seasons from 2016-’18, the Magic went 54-110. While there was a significant talent discrepancy between the two teams, he clearly wore off his welcome quickly.

Vogel would bring experience and defensive philosophy to the Lakers, which is something the Lakers could surely use. However, while his teams have faced LeBron James multiple years, Vogel isn’t known for having a great relationship with James like Lue and Williams do.

Given the chaos currently going on in the Lakers front office though, Vogel might be the team’s best option under the circumstances.
