Report: Cowboys could release first-round bust Taco Charlton

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Taco Charlton has made it clear he wants a new start somewhere else.

The 2017 first-round pick has been inactive for each of the Cowboys’ first two games after recording a combined four sacks in his first two NFL seasons.

In turn, Dallas has attempted to deal Charlton over the past several months. With no real suitors on the trade market, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport suggests that a release is imminent.

As noted in the report, former Pro Bowler Robert Quinn is slated to return after being suspended for the first two games of the season. That will push Charlton further down the Cowboys’ depth chart at defensive end.

This entire situation is interesting in that common logic suggests a team would throw a late-round pick in Dallas’ direction for a 24-year-old pass rusher just a couple years removed from being a first-round pick.

It certainly tells us a story of a player in Charlton who has fallen off the map in the eyes of pretty much every NFL team, the Cowboys included.
