Report: Cardinals expected to hire Mike McCoy as OC

Broncos head coach Vance Joseph with offensive coordinator Mike McCoy

New Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks is apparently on the verge of making his first major hire in that role.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals are expected to hire former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy as their next offensive coordinator.

McCoy, 45, spent four seasons as the Chargers’ head coach. He posted a 27-37 record from 2013-16, earning just one playoff appearance in the process. Prior to that, McCoy spent four seasons as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator, leading a No. 2 scoring offense back in 2012. He spent this past season back in Denver in that same role.

With a defensive-minded head coach in Steve Wilks, the expectation here has to be that McCoy will be the primary play-caller on offense for the Cardinals.
