Contradicting what some have suggested in recent days, a new report centers around the idea that Cam Newton could be open to a backup role.

Cam Newton could be backup ‘in the right situation’

Given his limited options, Newton may be forced to sign as a backup. And according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, he may be open to that “in the right situation.”

A starter throughout his career, Newton is in an interesting position now after being released by the Carolina Panthers. He is coming off a season-ending injury. Teams cannot get a first-hand look at his health right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the meantime, since his release teams have already filled their rosters.

There’s always a chance Newton will continue to wait things out this summer. He could simply remain a free agent hoping that a team’s starter suffers an unfortunate injury, necessitating his services.

If he does opt to sign with a team before that happens, we have an idea about where he should land.
