The Boston Red Sox have dealt with numerous injuries this season and now they’ll be adding their World Series MVP to the long list of players to hit the injured list.
Before Saturday’s game, Boston placed first baseman Steve Pearce on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain and recalled prospect Sam Travis to take his place on the active roster.
The 36-year-old has struggled in a part-time role this season with Boston in limited playing time. Pearce will head to the IL with a .180/.245/..258 slash line, one home run and 31/7 K/BB ratio in 89 at-bats.
In his absence, Boston will be hoping Travis can be more impactful with the bat during his stay. The 25-year-old owns a .730 OPS with three home runs and more strikeouts (45) than hits (42) in 49 games for Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Pearce, who was a key piece of Boston’s success in 2018 with a .901 OPS during the regular season, is without a timetable for his return.
