In a season full of disappointment and injuries, the Boston Red Sox suffered another blow on Saturday by losing starting pitcher Chris Sale to an elbow injury.

Boston is placing its ace on the 10-day injured list after diagnosing him with inflammation in his left elbow.

The 30-year-old experienced plenty of inconsistency throughout the 2019 season. He holds a 4.40 ERA on the year with stretches of brilliance and underwhelming starts.

Sale posted a 2.78 ERA with a 116/14 K/BB ratio across 11 starts in May and June. However, his last eight starts have seen his struggles from the beginning of the season return with aa 5.67 ERA and a 70/13 K/BB ratio.

Boston currently sits 6.5 games back of the wild-card spot entering the weekend and losing Sale is another blow to its diminishing playoff chances. Less than a year removed from winning the World Series, everything that could go wrong has for the Red Sox in 2019.
