Ravens rookie QB Trace McSorley taking reps as punt returner

The Baltimore Ravens are apparently looking to get the most out of rookie sixth-round pick, former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley.

The team has been using its likely third-string quarterback in a variety of different ways during its off-season program. That includes the smallish 6-foot signal caller lining up as a punt returner.

“It’s something that’s a new challenge for me, something that I hadn’t really had never done,” McSorley said, via the Ravens’ Final Drive podcast (h/t NFL.com). “So it’s just something interesting to be able to come in and learn and try and prove myself in a different way that I can be able to get on the field and make an impact.”

In addition to punt returner, McSorley has lined up at tight end, wide receiver, running back and even on the field goal block unit. This is pretty much the way the New Orleans Saints have used backup quarterback Taysom Hill.

McSorley was not a highly sought after quarterback prospect heading into the 2019 NFL Draft. But he does have the athleticism to make things work.

He put up 1,697 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns on the ground in three seasons as Penn State’s starter.
