Wyoming’s Josh Allen promises to be in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy this season. He’s also going to be bandied about as the potential top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Despite signing Brian Hoyer and selecting C.J. Beathard in the third round of this year’s draft, the San Francisco 49ers are still in need of a long-term solution at quarterback. Add in the fact that San Francisco will likely be picking in the top 10 next year, and it makes sense the team would be linked to Allen.

Though, it’s Allen himself who just made some waves in indicating that it “would be a dream come true to play for the 49ers.”

We’re a long way from the 2018 NFL Draft. There’s no telling how the 2017 season, from both a college football and professional football standpoint, will play out.

And as it relates to the 49ers, they have been linked a great deal to impending free agent Kirk Cousins. With what promises to be north of $70 million in cap room next year, it’s a contract the 49ers could definitely afford.

Though, there’s also reason to believe that first-year head coach Kyle Shanahan might want to add a young franchise-type quarterback through the draft. Currently with seven picks in the first four rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft, it’s a move the 49ers might be able to afford to make next spring.

At the very least, San Francisco now knows where one of the projected top quarterbacks would prefer to play. That should help during the scouting process.
