Pittsburgh Pirates place Chad Kuhl on COVID IL

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-handed pitcher Chad Kuhl on the COVID-19 injured list Monday and selected right-handed pitcher Shea Spitzbarth from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

Scheduled to start Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers, Kuhl now will be replaced in the rotation by left-hander Steven Brault, according to manager Derek Shelton.

Kuhl, 28, is 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 14 starts this season with 58 strikeouts in 67 innings. He has a 23-29 career mark into his fifth season – all with the Pirates — and has a a 4.37 ERA.

Spitzbarth, who has not pitched in the majors, was 3-2 with a 1.41 ERA, 25 strikeouts and .179 batting average against in 27 relief appearances with Indianapolis this season.
