The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed infielder Ildemaro Vargas off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Vargas, 29, appeared in nine games with the Cubs this season, going 3-for-21 with two doubles and two RBIs.

He was designated for assignment on Saturday.

Vargas debuted with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017 and stayed with the franchise into 2020. He also played for the Minnesota Twins (10 games) and Cubs (six games) last season.

He has a .246 career batting average in 151 games with eight homers and 37 RBIs.

Vargas hit .269 with six homers and 24 RBIs for Arizona in 2019.

To make room, the Pirates designated Troy Stokes Jr. for assignment. Stokes was 2-for-18 with a double and two RBIs in eight games for the Pirates.
