Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander JT Brubaker had surgery Wednesday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will miss the 2023 season and at least part of the 2024 campaign.

The team said Brubaker is expected to return to Pirates in 14 to 16 months after recovering from what is commonly called Tommy John surgery. He was the team’s Opening Day starter in 2022 and has not played since spring training this season because of his injured arm.

Brubaker, 29, made a career-high 28 starts last season, going 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA, 54 walks and 147 strikeouts.

In 63 appearances (61 starts) over three seasons with the Pirates, he is 9-28 with a 4.99 ERA, 109 walks and 324 strikeouts.
