Pirates release veteran C Francisco Cervelli

After joining the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015 and quickly becoming one of their best players, catcher Francisco Cervelli’s tenure with the organization came to an end on Thursday.

Pittsburgh placed the 33-year-old catcher on unconditional release waivers as the team granted his request to be released and become a free agent.

Cervelli appeared in only 34 games this season and posted a .193/.279/.248 slash line with a .527 OPS. He suffered the sixth concussion of his MLB career in May and has been sidelined since, though he did recently start a minor-league rehab assignment.

He’ll likely try and latch on with an MLB contender in the coming days with the hopes of making their playoff roster. According to The Pittsburgh Pst-Gazette’s Jason Mackey, Cervelli could have a deal in the works with the Atlanta Braves.

Cervelli won a World Series in 2009 with the New York Yankees and could be looking to close out his career with the pursuit of another.
