It was just late last month that rumors started to pick up regarding the Philadelphia Eagles targeting disgruntled Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Former NFL quarterback and NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms noted that owner Jeffrey Lurie had given general manager Howie Roseman permission to seek a trade if the price were right.
“Philadelphia is in that mix for the Deshaun Watson thing,” Simms said. “That’s a real thing. From everything I know, the owner has given them the green light as far as Howie Roseman and company to make that deal if it’s right.”
That might not be the case. In providing an update about his report last week indicating that the Texans have softened their stance involving a Watson trade, Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer noted on Sunday that the Philadelphia Eagles are not in on Watson. He also reaffirmed that the Miami Dolphins are the team to watch.

Watson, 25, is inactive for a fourth consecutive game to open the season against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. This comes after he requested a trade early in the offseason and following allegations from north of 20 women of sexual assault and/or misconduct being levied in the quarterback’s direction.

Philadelphia heads into Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at 1-2 on the season. It has lost two consecutive games, including a Week 3 blowout defeat at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys on “Monday Night Football.”
Sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts has had his ups and downs. After performing well in Week 1’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, he’s struggled a great deal. That included throwing a pick-six against Dallas last Monday.
Philadelphia being linked to Watson is nothing new. The team has an additional first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft with a second-rounder also likely coming via the Indianapolis Colts in the Carson Wentz trade.
Of course, there’s still a lot of moving parts as it relates to the reigning NFL passing yards leader. Recent suggestions are that there’s been no “new” trade talks surrounding the Pro Bowl signal caller.
With the NFL trade deadline quickly approaching, we’re at least going to see this come to somewhat of a culmination in season. If Watson is not dealt, and pending the outcome of his civil cases, rumors will pick up on this front during the spring.
