Fan petitions to get graduation ceremony moved so Phil Mickelson can compete in US Open

Barring something unforeseen like a massive weather delay, Phil Mickelson will not be competing in the 2017 U.S. Open. Instead, Lefty has put family first and will watch his daughter, Amanda, graduate high school.

One fan is throwing a Hail Mary to see if he can get Mickelson into the  field.

Amanda’s graduation from Pacific Ridge High School will take place on June 15, the same day as the opening round. Mickelson has made it clear that he would not even consider asking the school to change the date.

But Derek Deminsky, a PGA Pro for Golf Better Tucson, filed a petition on Change.org, trying to get the date moved to Wednesday.

“On behalf of golf fans everywhere, I am requesting to see if there is ANY WAY possible to reschedule your graduation ceremony to Wed June 14th (or before) to allow Phil Mickelson to play in this year’s U.S. Open and continue his quest for the career Grand Slam,” his request wrote. “For Phil not to play to see Amanda speak is absolutely beautiful and shows the kind of caring father and family man he is, but if there is ANY WAY POSSIBLE to move it to the day before, I and MILLIONS of golf fans everywhere would GREATLY appreciate it!”

More than 2,000 fans have signed Deminsky’s petition.

Unfortunately for Deminsky and those wanting to see Mickelson compete at Erin Hills, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

A statement from the school was made to Ryan Lavner of the Golf Channel, making it clear that June 15 is still the planned date.

“We take confidentiality seriously and do not comment on our students or families out of respect for their privacy,” the statement said. “We look forward to celebrating the Class of 2017 on June 15th.”

Those hoping to see Mickelson now need to hope for the first round to be essentially washed out. Otherwise, Mickelson’s quest for the career grand slam will have to wait until 2018 at Shinnecock Hills.
