Penn State fined after interim basketball coach’s comments

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

The Big Ten fined Penn State $10,000 and reprimanded interim basketball coach Jim Ferry for critical comments he made about the game officials following the Nittany Lions’ 80-72 loss to Purdue on Sunday.

The conference said Ferry violated its policy on sportsmanship.

Ferry was charged with a technical foul during the second half of the game and discussed it afterward.

“I was just fighting for our guys, man. I thought that some of the calls were a little uneven or inconsistent, whatever you want to call it,” Ferry said. “I’ve been coaching for a long time. I wasn’t ranting or raving, I wasn’t cursing. I thought there was a little sensitivity on that.”

Ferry was named interim coach of Penn State (3-6) after the resignation of Patrick Chambers following an internal investigation into inappropriate conduct.
