In the midst of a disappointing start to the season, the injury bug continues to plague the New England Patriots.

Running back Rex Burkhead was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after suffering a neck injury in Sunday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions.

Burkhead, 28, had been sharing running back duties with Sony Michel and James White after signing with the Patriots prior to last season.

In two-plus games, the former Nebraska standout racked up 117 total yards. Last season saw him put up north of 500 yards and eight touchdowns.

With Burkhead sidelined for the remainder of the season, Michel will continue to see lead ball-carrier duties. Meanwhile, third-down duties will be left solely up to White.
