Packers Sign Mike McCarthy to Well-Deserved Extension

Mike McCarthy has led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl championship and six playoff appearances in his eight-plus seasons as the team’s head coach.

So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the coach with the third-most wins in franchise history was extended on a multi-year contract on Monday. While the terms of the deal are not yet disclosed, it’s safe to assume that McCarthy will earn more than the $6 million he makes annually under his current deal.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson had this to say about the deal in a press release by the team (via Packers.com).

We are very happy to extend our relationship with Mike,” Thompson said. “Over the past nine years, he’s provided great stability and consistency to the Packers organization and our community as an excellent coach and leader. He’s a good man and we look forward to the future with Mike as our head coach.

Green Bay also released this pretty cool infographic about McCarthy’s already successful tenure with the franchise.

McCarthy, who began his NFL coaching career as a offensive quality control assistant with Kansas City in 1993, had previous stints with the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers as an offensive coordinator before taking the Packers head coaching job in 2006. And while this extension seems like a no-brainer, McCarthy didn’t necessarily get off to a good start with Green Bay. Following a six-win 2008 campaign, there was actually talk about the Packers moving in another direction.

Now six years later, McCarthy has been rewarded for the amazing job he’s done in Green Bay.
