Saturday’s game between the New York Red Bulls and New York City Football Club at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., was postponed due to inclement weather.

The match was postponed after a delay of nearly 2 1/2 hours and will be made up at a later date. At 10:44 pm EST, the Red Bulls tweeted “the referees have deemed the pitch unplayable and have called off the match.”

NYCFC (9-6-4, 31 points) sit 18 points behind the first-place New England Revolution and one behind third-place Nashville and Philadelphia. NYCFC are 4-1-2 in their past seven matches and were coming off a 1-0 loss on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

The Red Bulls (6-9-4, 22 points) have made the postseason for 11 consecutive seasons but that streak is in jeopardy. They are 1-4-3 in their past eight matches but were coming off a 1-0 home win over Columbus on Wednesday.

Shortly after the scheduled start, the Red Bulls tweeted the delay was because of lightning in the area. Then they announced a shelter in place order and said the earliest they could start was 10:42 EST.

It was the second sporting event in the New York area postponed. Shortly after the New York Yankees recorded a 7-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium, they announced their scheduled game for Sunday was postponed.

The inclement weather is due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Henri, which was upgraded from a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center on Saturday morning.
