It was a long time in the minor leagues for Jose Siri, with the Houston Astros showing that the outfielder was not forgotten.
Siri will have his contract selected by the Astros on Friday, the Houston Chronicle reported, after nine years in the minor leagues. The 26-year-old was first signed by the Cincinnati Reds when he was just 17 and began playing in the Dominican Summer League.
A video posted to social media shows Siri in the Triple-A Sugar Land locker room receiving the news that he had been called up. He puts his face in his hands while sitting at his locker as his teammates celebrate around him.
“What a year,” Sugar Land manager Mickey Storey said in front of the team late Thursday night. “He’s a very special player. I think we all know how special he is. He puts a lot of pressure on himself. … Tonight is the night he finally gets to go to the big leagues.”
Siri was batting .318 with Sugar Land in 94 games this season with 16 home runs and 72 RBIs. He is a .271 hitter with 84 home runs and 342 RBIs in 688 minor league games, not counting 125 games in foreign leagues while in the system of both the Reds and Astros.
The Astros have not yet announced a corresponding 40-man roster move and the report does not say if Siri will join the active roster immediately or be added to the taxi squad in preparation of being added to the active roster at some point this month.
