The Dallas Stars traded first- and third-round picks in February to acquire Mikael Granlund. Months later, Granlund is poised to depart in NHL free agency with several clubs reportedly preparing lucrative offers for him.
According to Cam Robinson of EliteProspects.com, Granlund is poised to receive offers from the San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, and Carolina Hurricanes, among other clubs.

- Mikael Granlund stats: 66 points (44 assists, 22 goals), 19 power-play points (14 assists, 5 goals), 13% shot rate, 49.6% faceoff win rate, 60 blocks, 57 hits, 19 takeaways
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported Tuesday that Dallas will not be able to retain Granlund. While the organization found him to be a great fit, they simply didn’t have the cap room to sign him compared to what he will get in the open market.
San Jose originally acquired Granlund in August 2023 from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The veteran forward was coming off an unproductive 21-game stint (5 points) with Pittsburgh. Upon landing in San Jose, he scored 105 points (78 assists, 27 goals) in 121 games.
The 33-year-old is now poised to cash in thanks to a free-agent market that has seen the majority of the top players re-sign with their clubs. It’s positioned Granlund, who is coming off consecutive seasons with 60-plus points, to land one of the biggest contracts in NHL free agency.
While he does have familiarity with the Sharks’ organization, St. Louis and Carolina would provide him with an opportunity to return to the postseason. Depending on the deal, it’s also possible he could sign with the Sharks and then be moved at the NHL trade deadline next year to a contender.
