Elmont, NY–
So no. New York did not come away with a win, but they’ll build toward more of those in time.
For now, the biggest victory is being here in the first place.
“It’s for the girls to come and the girls before us,” Shelton said. “I think what we do here today is huge for longevity.”

I love it. It brings tears to my eyes. We wrote on our sign, ‘Representation Matters.’ You got to see it to be it. I want her to know that she has a future in hockey. She can play professional hockey by seeing these amazing women play.
I think she’s lucky enough to not fully understand it. In the rec leagues, there are other girls playing. It’s not like it was when we were growing up. It’s it’s all around. She sees it everywhere. She doesn’t even realize the struggle that these women have had to create this professional league. To her, she’s growing up with the league. That’s a great thing. It means we’re evolving and growing as a society.

The spotlight is there for them. They deserve it. The league is taking care of them with the CBA they created. The staff that we have been able to hire, it takes commitment from the league, and it takes money to have that great staff joining us. It’s not about just the content. It’s how you’re going to wrap everything so it looks good.
We have the opportunity to have everybody under the same roof. you start with the best talent in the world, and we have all the tools coming from the league. There are tons of details that we don’t see because we’re going to watch a game. People don’t know how much time players are spending in the gym, with expert nutrition, with the coaches with the video coaches. Those are full-time staffs. This is not a part-time league
It’s definitely a dream come true. Dreams start with a plan. Now we have a great, great plan that comes from the league. We have the opportunity today to showcase it to the fans in New York.

There are a lot of talented women that play this game. It’s good to see them get some recognition and a platform to play.
My daughters love coming to the games and being there and watching them. They have as much of a love for it as I did when I was a young kid. It’s good to see the women have a leg to stand on with a league that seems to have its foundation in place. Hopefully, it can continue to grow, and people come out to support it.

The fans were great. We could hear them behind us, giving us everything they could give us. They were giving the refs a rough time when they thought maybe we didn’t deserve a few calls. We need that. We need a little bit of that support.
I’m very optimistic that this whole thing is gonna grow. Not just for New York but for everybody. The foundation is there. I think the league is doing some great things that are going to help us build that foundation and continue to solidify it so that we can complete the pyramid.
It’s just exciting what’s being generated here. I think the fans could see how strong these players are, how gifted they are and how hard they work. It’s not for a lot of money. They’re pro hockey players, but they’re not getting rich by any stretch. They’re doing this because they love the game, and they want to do it for a living.

There’s a lot of pride, for sure. When I think of myself back when I was a little girl, if I could watch TV and see a bunch of women playing hockey, I would be over the moon. It’s always been my dream to play hockey. To be able to create that avenue for more young girls has been pretty exciting.
