At 25 years old, DeBrincat has already posted two 40-plus goal seasons in his young NHL career and joins the Islanders as an immediate fix to the lack of goal elite goal-scoring that has plagued the team. In his first year with the Senators last season, he scored 66 points with 27 goals.

As a restricted free agent, DeBrincat declined to sign a reported eight-year extension with Ottawa, and he and his agent Jeff Jackson, have actively sought out a trade to a team willing to give him the kind of deal he wants. Meanwhile, Islanders’ president of hockey operations and general manager Lou Lamoriello said he’d be exploring the trade market to improve the team this summer.
