What’s better than the New Jersey Devils acquiring J.J. Peterka? Stealing him from under the rug of the New York Rangers, of course.

The realization has set in for the Buffalo Sabres. They’re reportedly ready to listen in on NHL trade offers for the rising star German winger. Peterka is said to be unhappy with the current situation, and both sides may have determined that a divorce is the best course of action.

Reports back at the 2025 NHL trade deadline suggested that the Rangers were heavy in pursuit of Peterka. Now, Elliotte Friedman has suggested that Rangers GM Chris Drury could explore being aggressive, and send an offer sheet Peterka’s way.

Friedman isn’t the only one linking Peterka to the Blueshirts. Frank Seravalli listed the Rangers (and the New York Islanders) among the several suitors for the 23-year-old scorer.

Reflecting on the Rangers’ recent history, it makes sense they’d be after Peterka, considering they just offloaded Chris Kreider’s full salary to the Anaheim Ducks.

Look, there’s plenty pointing to the Devils potentially going after the likes of Brad Marchand in free agency. However, if you can acquire a young, controllable asset such as Peterka before getting to the open market, that should be the preference.

Here’s the thing. The Devils make a lot of sense for Peterka. He can grow with the core, shotgun Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt’s line, and provide the scoring punch at both even strength and on special teams that was inconsistent last season.

His insertion into the Devils’ lineup also gives already existing players the opportunity to play in their proper position. Perhaps Timo Meier moves back to right wing full-time. Ondrej Palat could finally fulfill a proper depth role. Apply that same logic to Stefan Noesen.

Peterka immediately fills the Devils’ biggest need, while pushing all the right cogs into their proper place in the machine.

However, it’s not just from a New Jersey standpoint that a Devils trade for Peterka makes sense. It makes perfectly logical for the Sabres too.

It’s as simple as looking behind the Buffalo bench. Who is their head coach?

Former Devils head coach, Lindy Ruff.

Ruff’s tenure in New Jersey ended sooner than both the Devils and Ruff thought it would. So much sooner that Ruff did not get the opportunity to fulfill his new contract extension he signed with the team in October 2023.

However, Ruff was also the coach that led the Devils back to the playoffs following the the 2022-23 regular season, coaching the team to 112 points and a first round victory over the rival Rangers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Buffalo’s goal is to improve. They’ve already committed to Ruff for next season, thus, they’re going to want to equip him with the tools to be at his most successful.

Does subtracting Peterka improve the team? Not necessarily.

Yet, how about a player in return for Peterka who Ruff got the most out of during his time in New Jersey? Say, Dawson Mercer who scored 27 goals and nearly 60 points in the 2022-23 season.

The Sabres are also in the market for a right-handed defenseman.

Ruff has 40 games worth of fingerprints on defenseman Simon Nemec during his rookie season, when he played his best hockey (sans the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs) in a Devils uniform.

Perhaps there’s a deal that sends both Mercer and Nemec to Buffalo in exchange for Peterka. Two players Ruff has familiarity with, that can help move the needle in Buffalo, all while the Devils get a game breaker in Peterka.

The Devils have the assets to make a Peterka deal work. There’s the added incentive that Ruff could potentially know the incoming personnel. Buffalo is going to want to equip their head coach with as much as possible to be successful. The familiarity of two players with lots of potential, and plenty of room to grow, could help.

Acquiring Peterka should be high on the priority list for GM Tom Fitzgerald. And stealing him out from under the nose of the Rangers would make the acquisition taste that much sweeter.
