Look, I am fully aware that there are no moral victories at this stage of the season. However, without their superstar player and down to five defensemen for over three quarters of the game, the New Jersey Devils showed good fight against a team considered a Stanley Cup favorite.
The out of town scoreboard worked out in the Devils’ favor last night. There was no movement of significance. They need to use that feeling as motivation moving forward to get back to their winning ways.
As stated yesterday, the Devils run through Timo Meier now. He got the Devils’ comeback started last night. More on that in the links. Plus, the details of the trade New Jersey facilitated yesterday.
Also, Mikko Rantanen in New Jersey? Hey, it’s out there. More on that below.
Elsewhere, an ex-Devils goaltender on the brink of being traded, another ex-Devils inks an extension, and a Devils trade target comes off the board.
Let’s do that hockey.
Devils News
New Jersey Hockey Now: In the absence of Jack Hughes, the Devils aren’t going to find answers externally. Their best chance to fill the void is internally, and it’s Timo Meier who must drive New Jersey.
More NJHN: The Devils helped facilitate a trade yesterday that sent Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers. Here’s all the details involved in the three-team deal.
Even More: Amid losing Dougie Hamilton, New Jersey showed good fight against the Dallas Stars in a last-second heartbreaker.
We have yet to learn the extent of the Jack Hughes injury. However, if he’s out long-term, New Jersey Hockey Now learned the Devils have contacted the Carolina Hurricanes to express their interest in Mikko Rantanen. The Canes have yet to decide on if they’re selling the Finnish star. But, if they are, they’d like to be in the mix.
The Athletic ($): Pierre LeBrun corroborated the report later in the evening.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan offered an explanation–or at least most of one–as to why the team sent rookie goaltender Joel Blomqvist to the American Hockey League, and it’s pretty much what you might expect.
Boston Hockey Now: In losing Brad Marchand–who is week-to-week with an injury–the Boston Bruins lose more than just leadership amid tough times.
San Jose Hockey Now: Ex-Devils goaltender, current San Jose Sharks netminder, Vitek Vanecek, was supposed to start in net on Tuesday night. Instead, he was held out for trade-related reasons. It sounds like Vanecek will be on his third team in three seasons.
Florida Hockey Now: Speaking of ex-Devils, Jesper Boqvist has found a home in Sunrise. The Florida Panthers inked Boqvist to a two-year contract extension.
Montreal Hockey Now: Well, there’s one Devils trade target off the board. On Tuesday afternoon, the Montreal Canadiens and Jake Evans agreed to a four-year contract extension.
