It’s safe to say that Montreal Canadiens goaltender, Jakub Dobes, has a bright future in the NHL. The 24-year-old netminder has earned split starting duties on one of the NHLs hottest teams right now. However, after suffering an overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night, Dobes was highly emotional, and critical of himself.

Coming into the tilt in New Jersey, Dobes was 6-0-0 on the season with a 1.97 GAA and .930 SV%. His first NHL loss came at the hands of the Devils last season, after he won his first five games at the varsity level.

“I mean, it just sucks. It happened last year … losing to (the Devils) in OT, so (I’m) just disappointed in myself,” he said, referring to a 4-3 overtime loss against New Jersey in January of last season. Dobes made 40 saves despite the losing effort.

The Devils upended another win streak last night, after Timo Meier tied the game with 1:07 left in the third period, and then Jesper Bratt scored on a breakaway, sneaking the puck five-hole, in overtime.

Dobes allowed four goals for the first time this season, which ultimately led to his first loss. Despite his excellent play thus far, a very emotional Dobes pinned the loss on himself.

“We played good enough to win, just not good enough from my side,” Dobes told reporters. “I don’t know, (it’s) really hard.”

Dobes made -1.73 saves above expected.

After the loss, Dobes has thus far accrued an extremely respectable .920 SV% and 2.25 GAA. In 23 career NHL games, Dobes is 13-4-4 with a .912 SV% and 2.58 GAA.

The young Canadiens goaltender was visibly upset, holding back tears and speaking to reporters choked up after the loss. He eventually signaled to the Montreal PR staff that he could no longer field questions, and he needed to end the media scrum.

The Canadiens are one of the NHLs best teams right now, and Dobes is certainly a key factor. He’s, thus far, outplayed assumed No.1 goaltender Samuel Montembault.

Regardless, the Canadiens are still first in the Atlantic Division, and third overall in the NHL just behind the Devils in the standings.
