Prospect Alexander Zharovsky scored a goal in Salavat’s 3-2 win over Traktor, pushing his season totals to three goals and five assists in nine games. The talented prospect is currently on pace to earn 54 points, which would be more than Ivan Demidov produced in his rookie season with Saint-Petersburg (65 GP, 49 PTS).

There’s no doubt Jakub Dobes is a key factor in Montreal’s early-season success. He’s doing a particularly good job stopping high-danger scoring chances, which may force Martin St-Louis to lighten the load on current starter Samuel Montembeault.

The second line is scoring goals, and though their underlying numbers suggest it may not be sustainable, they have the full support of their coach. Possession stats aside, it’s clear Ivan Demidov and Oliver Kapanen have chemistry.

Habs coach Marty St. Louis today on Oliver Kapanen & Ivan Demidov:

The Canadiens decided to return centre Owen Beck to the AHL, while also recalling both Joshua Roy and Marc Del Gaizo from the Laval Rocket. The Habs are heading to Western Canada, which explains the need for defensive reinforcements. Roy is off to a solid start to the season, with three goals and an assist in four games. As for the reason Del Gaizo was recalled before Adam Engstrom, it’s a matter of development. It’s more important to keep Engstrom busy with as much ice time as possible, whereas Del Gaizo will provide injury-insurance during the road trip.

Brad Marchand celebrated the 16th anniversary of his NHL debut for the Bruins on Thursday by being back in Boston — only as a member of the Florida Panthers. What a return it started out to be. Marchand, the former captain of the Bruins, was cheered loudly by the Boston faithful during warmups and in the pregame. [Florida Panthers]

The Avalanche are honouring defenseman Brent Burns for reaching 1,500 career regular-season games on Thursday. The pre-game ceremony is set to take place ahead of the game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Burns spent three years with the Canes from 2022-25 and played in all 246 games. [Colorado Avalanche]

After the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first three games, a cynic or conspiracy theorist might have suggested that team captain and megastar Sidney Crosby was hurting his trade value in what might be dubbed a slow start to the season. [Pittsburgh Penguins]
