NHL roundup: Top performances, scores from March 31

Steven Fogarty recorded his first NHL goal and added an assist and Brandon Montour scored two late short-handed goals as the Buffalo Sabres snapped their franchise-record, 18-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night.

After blowing a 3-0, third-period lead Monday in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Flyers, Buffalo had no such concerns this time, building a 4-1 lead after two periods and pulling away. The Sabres ended an 0-15-3 skid that began after a 4-1 win at New Jersey on Feb. 23.

Sam Reinhart and Curtis Lazar also scored for Buffalo, which snapped an 0-9-2 home skid. Jacob Bryson, Rasmus Ristolainen and Kyle Okposo each posted two assists, and Linus Ullmark made 31 saves.

Ivan Provorov scored and Brian Elliott allowed four goals on 16 shots before being pulled for Philadelphia, which had won two straight overall and five straight against the Sabres.

Avalanche 9, Coyotes 3

Joonas Donskoi had a hat trick in the first period and later added an assist, Gabriel Landeskog had two goals and an assist and Colorado beat Arizona in Denver to move into first place in the West Division.

Andre Burakovsky also scored two goals for the Avalanche, Mikko Rantanen had a goal and two assists, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare had a goal and an assist and Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 shots. Nathan MacKinnon and Samuel Girard added two assists each.

Michael Bunting had a goal and an assist, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Conor Garland also scored and Ivan Prosvetov had 23 saves in his NHL debut for the Coyotes. Prosvetov came in for Adin Hill, who allowed four goals on 10 shots before being pulled 6:04 into the game.

Kings 4, Golden Knights 2

Calvin Petersen made 40 saves and Andreas Athanasiou had a goal and an assist as Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak at the expense of Vegas in Las Vegas.

It was Petersen’s second victory in 10 days over Vegas, which had a six-game home winning streak snapped. Lias Andersson, Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Alex Iafallo also scored goals for the Kings, who moved within four points of fourth-place St. Louis for the final playoff spot in the West Division.

Shea Theodore had a goal and an assist and William Karlsson also scored for Vegas, which dropped out of first place in the West. Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 26 saves for the Golden Knights, who fell a point behind the Avalanche.

Sharks 4, Wild 2

Martin Jones made 26 saves to help San Jose complete a two-game sweep of visiting Minnesota.

Nikolai Knyzhov scored his first NHL goal in his 38th game, and Rudolfs Balcers, Ryan Donato and Evander Kane also scored for the Sharks, who pulled within four points of fourth place in the West Division.

Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello scored and Kaapo Kahkonen made 29 saves for the Wild, who have won a franchise-record 11 straight home games but are 0-4-1 in their past five road games with one road win since Feb. 24.

Maple Leafs 3, Jets 1

Auston Matthews scored a goal in his third consecutive game and Jack Campbell made 26 saves to fuel Toronto’s win over host Winnipeg.

Zach Hyman matched Matthews by collecting a goal and an assist and Alexander Kerfoot added a short-handed tally for the Maple Leafs, who are 4-0-1 in their past five games. Mitchell Marner contributed two assists.

Defenseman Josh Morrissey scored a power-play goal for the Jets, who saw captain Blake Wheeler sustain an undisclosed injury late in the first period and did not return. Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves for the Jets.
