For New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to remain so sharp and accurate at the age of 38, he has a strict, regimented schedule that includes an 8:30 bedtime and healthy diet.

Beyond his physical health, though, Brady has high standards for material worthy of an autograph. According to Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post, he wouldn’t autograph a picture where his throwing motion was poor.

“He obsesses over his well-grooved throwing motion, to the point of vanity. Recently the head of Patriots media relations brought him a photo to autograph. Brady rejected it because he didn’t like the way his finish looked. ‘I don’t want that one — look at my mechanics.'”

Jenkins said that Brady has a “taste for tedium” about how he tries to perfect his skills.

“I think at this stage in my career, I’m just very efficient with how I prepare my body… I love the whole process and preparation. And I’m always looking for ways to improve.”

Brady’s improvements—whatever they may be—are definitely paying off. The defending-champion and 8-0 Patriots are one of three remaining undefeated NFL teams.

Instead of partying and drinking with the guys, Brady’s dessert of choice is an avocado-based ice cream, and he wakes up at 3:30 in the morning to study film.

Considering the dedication to his craft, Brady has earned the right to be picky about which photos he chooses to autograph for the fans.
