Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is not the type to put his thoughts into words, which makes it really difficult to determine what exactly he is thinking regarding the latest rumors of his possible retirement from the NFL.
Even NFL Media’s Michael Robinson—a close friend and former teammate of Lynch’s—is puzzled. He had this to say regarding “Beastmode” on NFL Network’s Total Access.
I don’t know exactly what Marshawn is thinking. I don’t think anyone knows exactly what he’s thinking. But what I do know is that the guys in that locker room mean the world to him. What I do know is that he’s the best running back in National Football League. And what I also know is he is under contract next year.
What we do know is Lynch does things on his own sweet timetable. If he does not want to speak, he won’t. If he wants to show up late to training camp to make a statement, he will. The Seahawks, who proposed a major contract extension on February 1 to the tune of Lynch possibly seeing $10 million for 2015 alone, will anxiously be awaiting his retirement decision.
Robinson did shed a bit more light on Lynch.
I cannot sit here 100 percent and say he will retire. We talk about him saying ‘I’m about that action.’ It’s not just about football. Go to that Oakland community. Go to the kids that he’s servicing. Talk to those kids. … That’s what’s really important to him. …
This is a man of principle. He’s a very private guy. When he sets his mind to something, that’s what he believes in.
Lynch is coming off of an amazing 2014 season that saw him tally 1,673 yards, 17 touchdowns and a second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. If it is time for him to ride off into the sunset, perhaps to his old hometown of Oakland, we likely won’t hear this directly from his mouth.
