In a move many expected, the Atlanta Falcons have “released” head coach Mike Smith from his contract. This comes a day after Atlanta was blown out by 31 points at home against the Carolina Panthers with the NFC South title on the line.
It’s also a move that many expected.
After leading the Falcons to the NFC Championship game in 2012, Smith has led the team to a combined 10-22 record over the past two seasons. Some will focus on injuries playing a major role here, but Smith has drawn a ton of scrutiny for questionable in-game coaching decisions throughout his career.
Atlanta put up a winning record in each of Smith’s first five seasons as the team’s head coach, tallying double digit victories four times. At that point, it looked like the Falcons were heading towards their first-ever Super Bowl championship.
Since then, the wheels came off big time for Smith and his team. This is simply a move that needed to be made from an organizational standpoint.
