The Dallas Cowboys have activated Josh Brent to their 53-man roster. The move came on Tuesday, nearly two years after Brent’s former teammate Jerry Brown was killed in an accident in which Brent was driving drunk.
Brent has been out of action since that tragic event back in December of 2012. He spent over four months in jail after being convicted of intoxication manslaughter. Brent’s return to the active roster comes after he served a 10-game suspension to start the season.
It also comes on the heels of Brent receiving support from Brown’s family to continue a promising career that seemed destined to be cut short by the DUI accident that killed one of his best friends.
Responding to questions (and some criticism) about giving Brent another chance, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had this to say (via Associated Press).
He had some experiences since he’s last been on the field … that make him appreciate every second he gets to be on the football field and gets to be contributing and he’s got some real goals…He wants to help that little girl very much, which is Jerry Brown’s daughter.
That quote was in relation to Brent indicating in the past that one of his goals is to play for the daughter Brown left behind when he was killed in that DUI accident.
There are so many different levels to this story. Too many to focus on in one article.
But let’s just hope that Brent makes the most of this opportunity and proves that he can live a productive life following the unfortunate events of two years ago.
