New York Yankees right-hander Jameson Taillon was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle tendon injury.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday for Taillon, who had been scheduled to start Sunday night’s game against the New York Mets.

“It sounds worse than it is,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I think there is a chance he misses only one (start), but it could be something that drags on.”

Boone said Taillon is in a walking boot and was optimistic he would shed the boot by Friday.

Taillon, 29, is 8-6 with a 4.41 ERA in 27 starts during his first season with the Yankees. He was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in January in exchange for four minor-league prospects. Taillon has lost his past two starts after going 7-0 with a 3.63 ERA during a 15-start unbeaten stretch.

Taillon owns a 37-30 record with a 3.84 ERA in 109 career starts with the Pirates and Yankees. He was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft.

Boone did provide good news on the condition of ace Gerrit Cole’s tight left hamstring.

Cole played catch before Thursday’s series finale against Toronto and Boone said he could start Monday’s makeup game against the visiting Minnesota Twins or Tuesday’s series opener in Baltimore.

Cole exited after allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits in 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday. His last pitch resulted in a sacrifice fly to Toronto’s Reese McGuire and signaled for a trainer immediately thereafter.

Right-hander Sal Romano was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Taillon’s spot on the roster.

Romano, 27, is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA in 17 relief appearances with three different teams this season. He made 14 appearances with the Cincinnati Reds, one with the Milwaukee Brewers and two with the Yankees.

Outfielder Jonathan Davis was designated for assignment by the Yankees.
