The New York Yankees activated left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery and catcher Gary Sanchez off the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday ahead of their day-night doubleheader against Boston.

Montgomery will take the mound in Game 1 in Tuesday’s matinee.

The team also appointed RHP Luis Gil as their 27th man for the twin bill. Gil will be the starter in the nightcap.

Montgomery – along with Gerrit Cole – tested positive for COVID-19 and was put on the IL Aug. 3. Cole returned to the mound Monday night in the Yanks’ win over the Los Angeles Angels. Sanchez became the third Yankee to test positive a couple of days later.

Montgomery is 4-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 114 2/3 innings pitched this season.

Sanchez is batting .216 with 17 home runs and 39 RBIs in 84 games.

Gil is 1-0 without an ERA in two starts this season. He has struck out 14 in 11.0 innings.

The Yankees head into the doubleheader two games behind the Red Sox for second place in the AL East.
