It took a couple training camp practices and some in-depth negotiations, but Zach Wilson has finally inked his rookie contract with the New York Jets.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the rookie No. 2 pick has signed a fully-guaranteed four-year contract worth a projected $35.1 million. Said deal includes a $22.9 million signing bonus.
Once the San Francisco 49ers signed Trey Lance on Wednesday, Wilson became the only remaining unsigned first-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft. Obviously, this situation did not paint the Jets in the best of lights.
The hold up was seemingly off-set language. That is to say, the Jets being able to collect some of the guaranteed cash remaining on Wilson’s contract should he not play out the full four-year pact.
The compromise between Zach Wilson and the Jets included the former BYU standout receiving no deferral in his signing bonus with New York getting off-set language.
Wilson is expected to be New York’s Week 1 starter when it opens the season against the New England Patriots on Sept. 12.
