The New York Jets are moving on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason, which means they’ll need a new starting quarterback in 2025. Boasting the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Jets could try targeting a young prospect who can become the QB of the future.
Yet, with only two quarterbacks projected to be worthy of a first-round selection, both of the top prospects could be gone by the time the Jets are on the clock. As a result, the Jets could find themselves in a similar position as the Las Vegas Raiders did last year, stuck starting the year with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell.
There’s already a new favorite emerging on who could be the Jets’ Week 1 starting quarterback in 2025 and Jets fans probably won’t like it.

Tyrod Taylor emerges as early favorite to be New York Jets QB in 2025

In a perfect world, the New York Jets will be able to find an upgrade over Aaron Rodgers this offseason. Yet, if the four-time NFL MVP couldn’t turn in a Pro Bowl-worthy performance with the Gang Green, who’s to say another veteran can?
Nevertheless, the Jets are expected to cast a wide net in search of their next starting quarterback, but according to The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, the current favorite to start in New York is already on the roster.
“Taylor is under contract for 2025 at a reasonable $6.8 million cap hit. The 35-year-old isn’t the most exciting option and has had trouble staying healthy over the years, but he’s experienced (58 career starts) and capable of at least managing an offense. He’s much more willing to take shots downfield than Rodgers (sometimes to his detriment) and is beloved by many in the Jets locker room, namely Garrett Wilson. Taylor is the early favorite, though the Jets will consider all options. It’s conceivable that Taylor will compete with a rookie or another QB option in training camp for the right to start in Week 1.”

As Rosenblatt writes, chances are, if Taylor is one of the top two quarterbacks on the Jets’ depth chart, he’ll likely be there as a placeholder until the rookie is ready to take the reins of the offense.
