NFL insider offers promising update on Quinnen Williams contract talks with New York Jets

Quinnen Williams is one of the NFL Top 100 players in 2023 and soon the New York Jets could make him one of the highest-paid NFL players for years to come.

Williams, the third pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, emerged as one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL last season. He earned first-team All-Pro honors and made his first Pro Bowl, helping anchor one of the best defenses in the league.

The breakout season came at the perfect time for Williams. After completing the fourth year of his rookie-scale contract, the 6-foot-3 defensive lineman proved he deserved to be one of the highest-paid players at his position. Strengthening his argument, defensive tackles Javon Hargrave, Jeffery Simmons and Daron Payne all received market-setting contracts.

However, Williams and the Jets were millions of dollars apart with their offers early this season. Entering a contract year, the 25-year-old scrubbed all references to the team from his social media and planned to skip camp. Fortunately for New York, the situation has improved.

Appearing on Sunday’s SportsCenter, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler provided an update on where things stand between the Jets and Williams as they negotiate a contract extension.

“This is going to be a big-money deal. Jets are optimistic they can get this done. They just have not got it to the finish line yet. The Jets have $23 million in cap space, so they should be able to maneuver. They’re all in on the Aaron Rodgers era, this guy’s a big piece of that so they have to get it done. But he might not show up for a while to workouts without a new contract, so the pressure will mount here eventually. Could be in the $23 million range or even more.”

Based on the contract extensions signed by his peers, Williams will likely land a deal worth more than $24 million per season. The Jets would tack it onto his existing real, which could increase his cap hit in 2023 to provide the front office with more cap flexibility long-term.

New York is taking an all-in approach this season, acquiring Aaron Rodgers and signing Randall Cobb with the hope of landing one of the longest championship droughts in sports. However, signing Williams to an extension helps the franchise now and in the future.
