NFL rumors: Insider claims New York Giants want to steal away New York Jets difference-maker in free agency

A new report from a New York Giants insider reveals the team’s top priority in NFL free agency. And they may have a player from the New York Jets at the top of their wish list.

The next few weeks will be very important for New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen. After an impressive start for his regime three seasons ago, the franchise has quickly slid into being an afterthought following a pair of losing seasons. Including a 3-14 showing in 2024.

If he hopes to keep his job after this season, he will need to add a boatload of high-impact players this offseason. The NFL Draft in April will certainly offer the team several strong and affordable options. But they also must try and make some waves in free agency as well.

Late last week, ESPN Giants insider Jordan Raanan pointed to the team’s biggest focus on the open market this month, and revealed the players they could have high on their free agency wish list.

“The Giants need a CB1,” Raanan wrote. “They can’t go into next season with Deonte Banks as their top cornerback again, and who knows how the draft will play out. That makes it imperative that they sign a No. 1 cornerback in free agency.”

So who could the G-Men target to bolster the position for 2025? Well, the team claims there is early interest in going after New York Jets veteran DJ Reed, among several other players.

  • DJ Reed stats (2024): 14 games, 64 tackles, 1 sack, 11 passes defended

“Sources at the combine indicated the Giants are expected to shop near the top end of the cornerback market. D.J. Reed is expected to have a strong market and won’t come cheap, but there is interest,” Raanan revealed. “Charvarius Ward and Paulson Adebo are other options the Giants are expected to consider.

“They at least checked in on Minnesota’s Byron Murphy II as well. New York will also look into Jaire Alexander should he shake free from Green Bay and not get traded.”

Reed has been a rock solid player throughout his seven-year career. While he isn’t the ball hawk the team could use, he is a very competent pass defender and tackler. He would give them the sort of reliable CB the defense needs next season.
