Following the Philadelphia Eagles’ win in the NFC Championship game, the New York Giants found out the hard way that the staff for a legendary landmark in their home state has questionable loyalties when it comes to professional football.

For some Giants fans, Sunday afternoon was hard to watch. As hated rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the San Francisco 49ers en route to punching their ticket to this year’s Super Bowl. The win came just a week after Philadelphia destructively brought an end to New York’s season in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs.

While some fans may be willing to root for their conference contemporaries when it comes to league championships, that is not the case for the teams that battle each other throughout the season in the North East section of the United States.

If a New York team makes it to a championship game, don’t expect fans from Boston, Philadelphia, or Pittsburgh to show support. However, even if there is a divide between the various teams inside New York, keeping the support to teams inside the state is still a rule of thumb.

However, the staff of the Empire State Building showed a shocking lack of loyalty to New York on Sunday night.

Empire State Building betrays New York Giants, shows love to Philadelphia Eagles

In an effort to modernize the building, the owners of the Empire State Building installed lights at the top of the building in 1976. The lights have become a unique characteristic of the landmark over the last two decades as the building’s staff adjusts the colors to show support for local sports teams, holidays, or special causes.

However, on Sunday night, the staff showed an awful of loyalty to New York when they revealed they would don the world-famous building’s top levels in the colors of the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles. A photo of the shocking betrayal can be seen above.

Either Eagles fans have invaded the staff of the Empire State Building or mean-hearted Jets fans are making the decisions. Nevertheless, it was surely a horrible sight for New York Giants fans in Manhattan on Sunday that were still recovering from the team’s defeat last week.

Word quickly spread about the treachery from the Empire State Building’s staff as not only did the Giants comment on the post in confusion but so did the Twitter account of the New York City Sanitation department.

“For anyone who finds this as treacherous, traitorous, and unforgivable as we do — just pretend it’s green and white for #NewYorksStrongest. We take out the trash every day…and next year, that’ll include the Eagles,” the Twitter post read.
