It’s not only the United States that’s seeing racial strife and division during these most difficult of times. We’ve witnessed protests breakout throughout Europe and Latin America since the murder of George Floyd back on May 25.

Some of the things we’ve seen seemingly brings out the best in mind kind. Others bring out the worst. This is the latter.

Neo-Nazis vandalize Giannis Antetokounmpo mural in his home country of Greece

This is disturbing in so many ways. The racism and downright ugliness on display is grotesque.

Born in Athens to Nigerian parents, the Greek Freak is seen as a legend in his home country after walking away with the NBA MVP award last season. Though, Greece itself has not been immune from racism and Neo-Nazism throughout its history. It was noted last year that attacks against minorities populations and refugees in the European country have been on the rise.

As for the defacement of Giannis’ mural, it took place at Palaio Faliro, a seafront tourist destination. It also comes with the NBA season set to resume amid internal strife here in the states.

NBA makes commitment to Black Lives Matter as season nears return

Suspended since back on March 11, the NBA season will return to action at Walt Disney World in Orlando on July 30. The backdrop being the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and racial tensions continuing to boil over here in the United States.

The NBA has committed to addressing racial inequality and police brutality during the season. At least one big-name owner has also indicated that he would take part in national anthem protests if his players see fit.

Even as a foreign-born black man, Giannis is not immune from the issues that continue to plague the United States. This is yet another ugly example of that.
