WATCH: NC State beats Vanderbilt despite Jack Leiter’s 15 strikeouts

Top MLB pitching prospect Jack Leiter struck out 15 batters, but one mistake to Terrell Tatum proved to be the difference as the North Carolina State Wolfpack beat the Vanderbilt Commodores 1-0 on Monday at Omaha, Neb.

Tatum blasted a 0-1 pitch into the right field bleachers in the fifth inning for the game’s only run.

Leiter, ranked by as the No. 3 prospect for the 2021 MLB Draft by MLB.com, threw 123 pitches in eight innings, giving up only four hits and one walk.

While Leiter was the headliner, Wolfpack starter Sam Highfill had a great day of his own. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up only two hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Evan Justice threw 1 2/3 shutout innings of relief for the save.

The Commodores (46-16) had a runner reach second base only once in the game.

Vanderbilt will now play Stanford in an elimination game Wednesday. The winner of that game will play NC State (37-18) on Friday.
