The Sacramento Kings are in the market for a point guard this offseason following the De’Aaron Fox trade in February. With a trade seemingly not materializing, it appears the Kings might be the favorites for a veteran guard in NBA free agency.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Kings are “being painted” around the lead as the likely top suitor for impending free-agent point guard Dennis Schroder.

- Dennis Schroder stats: 13.1 PPG, 5.4 APG, 2.6 RPG, 40.6% FG, 1.7 3PM per game, .073 Win Shares per 48 Minutes
The 31-year-old point guard spent time with three teams last season. He started with the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 assists per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field. He then struggled after being traded to the Golden State Warriors, averaging just 10.6 points and 4.4 assists per game while shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
However, after being flipped to the Detroit Pistons, Schroder performed relatively well coming off the bench. He recorded a career-best Win Shares per 48 minutes (0.100) and averaged 5.3 assists per game in just 25.2 minutes per contest.

Sacramento will face some significant competition to land Schroder. Detroit reportedly wants to re-sign him, and the Dallas Mavericks are eyeing him as a short-term replacement for Kyrie Irving. Other NBA teams will likely get involved, especially if Schroder is willing to come off the bench next season.
The one advantage the Kings might have is that their desperation for a true point guard could mean Schroder becomes their primary starter next season. He’d have little competition behind him, which could prove tempting if he signs a one-year deal with the hope of a strong season leading to a bigger contract next summer.
