Graded stakes winner Mutasaabeq will be sidelined for the winter and spring due to a calf injury, taking the 3-year-old out of consideration for the Kentucky Derby.

“It’s unfortunate timing. Thankfully he won’t be out too long, hopefully see him back at Belmont or Saratoga,” trainer Todd Pletcher told Bloodhorse.com on Thursday. “At this time of year, you can’t afford to miss any time if you are going to make the Derby. We’ll unfortunately miss that, but he’ll be fine and hopefully back for a good summer campaign.”

The Daily Racing Form first reported the injury.

The son of Into Mischief, Mutasaabeq won the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 2. That followed winning a maiden race at Saratoga Race Course and the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland in four races last year.

Mutasaabeq had been training for Saturday’s Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream, and had been a 47-1 longshot in the second pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager that closed Jan. 24, according to Bloodhorse.com.
