Montreal Canadiens acquire defenseman Jon Merrill from Detroit Red Wings

The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Jon Merrill from the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday for a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and minor-league forward Hayden Verbeek.

Merrill, 29, has five assists and a plus-2 rating in 36 games with the Red Wings this season.

He has 66 points (12 goals, 54 assists) in 392 career games with the New Jersey Devils, Vegas Golden Knights and Red Wings. He was selected by the Devils in the second round of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Verbeek, 23, is the nephew of Red Wings assistant general manager Pat Verbeek.

Hayden Verbeek has spent time in 2020-21 with Banska Bystrica HC 05 in the Slovakian Extraleague (European Elite) as well as Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League. He has three goals and two assists in 11 games split between the two clubs.
