With the New York Yankees reeling and losing their grip on the American League East lead, they are reportedly interested in acquiring a 2024 All-Star third baseman to fill a position of need.
The Yankees were linked to St. Louis Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado in the offseason, and reportedly offered pitcher Marcus Stroman, but were rebuffed. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has split his time between second base and the hot corner, while the Yankees have also used Oswaldo Cabrera — who is on the 60-day injured list — Oswald Peraza and DJ LeMahieu at third.

But offensively, the Yankees’ third basemen rank 17th in baseball in OPS (.674), 24th in batting average (.221), and tied for 13th in home runs (10).
Looking to upgrade at third, New York Post’s MLB insider Jon Heyman reports the Yankees have reached out to the Colorado Rockies about Ryan McMahon, who was an All-Star last year. McMahon was a favorite at the 2024 trade deadline but the Rockies refused to pull the trigger.
It was a rough start to the year for McMahon, as he slashed .126/.267/.218 with only two home runs in April, but he’s rebounded since. Overall, he has 12 home runs, 12 doubles, a .704 OPS and 89 OPS+ on the season. McMahon is also solid defensively at third.
The 30-year-old is controllable through the 2027 season. He’s making $12 million this year and is on the books for 2026 and 2027 at $32 million total.
If the Yankees can pull off a trade, they would have their infield set with McMahon at third, Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Chisholm manning second, and Paul Goldschmidt at first base.
With the Rockies on pace to set the all-time modern-day loss record of 121 set by the Chicago White Sox last season, they need to start offloading veterans that can help them acquire prospects and young talent. If not, Colorado will continue to be mired in the National League West basement.
