A top MLB insider claims that with the Chicago Cubs in position for a World Series run this year, they have reached out about trades for impact starters to add to their rotation. Including one-time Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.
After six straight seasons with records around .500 and one trip to the playoffs, the Cubs are back to being among the National League’s best. Heading into their game on Wednesday against the Cardinals, they own one of the five best records in baseball. However, if they want to go far in the 2025 playoffs, they need more meaningful arms in the rotation.

Well, The Athletic MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reports Chicago is on the hunt for pitching help. And has had recent conversations about potential trades, including for a game-changer talent.
“The Cubs’ biggest need, after losing left-hander Justin Steele to season-ending elbow surgery and righty Javier Assad to a strained left oblique, is a pitcher who could start a postseason game,” Rosenthal writes. “That type of pitcher almost certainly will be in scant supply at the deadline.

“But the Cubs, according to sources briefed on their plans, already are canvassing the market. Making inquiries on Miami Marlins right-handers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, among many others.”
The Marlins’ ace is a two-time All-Star and won the Cy Young Award in 2022. However, after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, he has struggled in his first season back. Posting 6.69 ERA and 1.459 WHIP after 15 starts. But he has been pitching better of late. And many scouts around the league expect him to recapture his elite form as the year goes on.
Cabrera would also be a solid addition for the Cubs. While not a player with the resume and talent of Alcantara, he is a rock-solid arm that would add more depth to their staff for the second half.
