The Houston Astros are in first place in the AL West entering MLB games today, sitting more than 10 games above .500 just a month after holding a 25-24 record. With the MLB trade deadline approaching, the front office is looking for ways to strengthen the roster.
During an appearance on the club’s pregame radio show, Astros general manager Dana Brown said the club is “having discussions” about acquiring a left-handed bat. Other positions are also being kept in mind, but adding a left-handed hitter is the priority.
“It’s no secret, it’d be good to get a left-handed bat. No doubt about that. That’s the big thing for us. We’re having discussions about other things, but the one big issue for us, it’d be nice to get a left-handed bat.”

- Houston Astros lineup stats (ESPN): 333 runs scored (16th), .257 batting average (3rd), .323 OBP (12th), .402 slugging (14th)
Houston’s run production has improved over the last month. From May 24 through June 23, per FanGraphs, the Astros lineup had the ninth-most runs scored (126) with the third-highest batting average (.271) and the sixth-best OPS (.763).
However, the absence of left-handed hitter Yordan Alvarez is still looming large. He hasn’t played since May 2, and there’s still no timeline for him to resume hitting as he remains sidelined by a hand injury.

While Brown obviously didn’t mention any specific hitters, there are a few left-handed hitters among the MLB trade candidates this year. Arizona Diamondbacks’ first baseman Josh Naylor (.824 OPS), Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan O’Hearn (.867 OPS), Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins (.736 OPS), Miami Marlins outfielder Jesús Sánchez (.734 OPS), and Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon (.737 OPS) are among the left-handed batters who could be moved this summer.
