Frankie Montas could finally make his New York Mets debut very soon. However, a new report suggests he may not do it as a member of the starting rotation.
“Montas had his worst rehab start yet Friday. There’s only time for one more minor-league start before his 30-day rehab clock expires June 22,” The Athletic’s Mets insider Tim Britton reported. “Montas says he’s healthy and progressing toward where he wants to be. If the Mets deem he hasn’t made enough progress, his return could be in the bullpen.”
New York inked the nine-year veteran to a two-year, $34 million deal this offseason. Outside of signing Juan Soto and bringing Pete Alonso back, the pitcher was one of their most notable additions in the winter. However, a high-grade lat strain suffered in spring training has kept him sidelined for all of the regular season thus far.
Frankie Montas stats (2024): 7-11 record, 4.84 ERA, 1.367 WHIP, 148 strikeouts, 66 walks
The Mets surely could use another proven arm in the rotation after ace Kodai Senga went down with a hamstring injury last week. However, Sean Manaea is expected to make his season debut soon and will likely fill that spot. Furthermore, despite not having a star-studded group, New York has had, arguably, the best starting staff in MLB over the first half.
While it would seem like a waste to have the long-time starter work out of the bullpen after signing him to a solid deal, the rotation has been better than expected and isn’t desperate for help. Getting him up to speed and allowing him to work out certain wrinkles in his stuff before returning to the rotation isn’t an absurd idea.
Montas posted a 7-11 record in his first season backing following major shoulder surgery. While he struggled for much of the season, he seemed to find himself late in the 2024 campaign. It is why some around the league viewed the Mets’ signing him as a smart risk.
