The Cleveland Guardians don’t play until later tonight, but they’re already making headlines for unique reasons.

Out of nowhere, the Guardians released a statement revealing that their 26-year-old starting pitcher, Luis Ortiz, is under investigation by MLB.

Although, no one really knew what he was under investigation for. Or, if they do, no one was talking about it publicly right away. Though, the Guardians are not allowed to provide comments on the matter while the investigation is ongoing.

However, ESPN’s MLB insider Jeff Passan later provided a key update, revealing Ortiz is actually under MLB investigation for gambling.

“Luis Ortiz is being investigated for two individual pitches — one June 15, another June 27 — that received action flagged by a betting-integrity firm”

He’s the latest in a long line of athletes and coaches to be under investigation for gambling on sports events, but no penalties have been handed down to Ortiz.

Ortiz has pitched 88.2 innings this season, where he’s compiled an ERA of 4.36. It is unknown when his baseball career will resume, but he’s apparently still being paid by the Guardians while investigators gather more information.
